Fishing Pressure
La Crosse, Wisconsin, is a big time bass tournament series magnet for good reason. This section of the Mississippi river (Pool 8) is loaded with backwater bass lakes that produce time and time again.
Top water frog fishing in La Crosse has become legendary and many anglers bring their limit to the scales with this top water dandy of a lure. However, there are other major baits that bring home trophies here.
The original swim jig master sharpened his skills here and has made the swim jig the boss of the local events. Both largemouth bass and smallmouth bass alike go bonkers over the swim jig. Tie on a 1/4 ounce or 3/8 ounce swim jig, preferably in white, and you’re in for a great day if you find clear water with some vegetation and current.
Don’t overlook the massive river smallmouth when planning your tournament strategy. While a hefty bag of swim jig and frog largemouth will surely impress, a bag of monster smallies from this pool can be scale breakers and win you some tournament money!
There is a short boat ride north to get into pool 7 and tons of great backwater fishing south. We haven’t forgotten about the Black River or the hundreds of docks and bridges either. Bring plenty of food and drink when you fish La Crosse because you won’t want to leave!
