Bass Fishing Spirit Lake

Things you should know about bass fishing from Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Big Spirit Lake is very open and subject to the wind.  Winds over 10 MPH can make fishing this lake tough.  Winds at 20 MPH should give tournament directors cause for delays or rescheduling.  While some area of the lake can be calmer than others, three foot rollers can happen quickly, anglers beware and be cautious.

Big Spirit Lake has mostly depth changes for structure.  While there are some rocky mounds and gravel covered bottoms in different areas, bass will use depth changes as structure in cooler waters.  Once late spring is over and vegetation comes back, weed lines take over as do docks and shaded areas.  Local anglers still target smallmouth on the depth changes in summer as they know these structure areas are year round for the bigger bass.

Smallmouth bass can get large and often feed on perch.  Target any structure that allows quick access to deep drops and migration routes for bait fish.  Wind blown docks can be excellent with high sun and abundant weeded areas nearby.
